However, 2009 was the year when Tyson gained real recognition in the Hollywood industry. His appearance in the movie “The Hangover” changed his life. The success of the movie made him feel like a winner once again. Soon, he started receiving more offers to work in Hollywood movies as well.
“Here was a guy who was just like us, went to the same schools, ate free lunch and grew up just like we did,” Briggs said. “You could be down and out, lose everything, but guess what, you got a chance — do something. Use that energy, use your pain as a fuel, and Mike Tyson shows you that.”
At the time of its creation, the IBF was called United States Boxing Association International (USBA-International) but was later renamed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) officially in 2018. The packaging of Tyson couldn’t have been executed better but, in order to maximize its potential, he had to beat Berbick. The 32-year-old Jamaican’s amateur career was brief but highly accomplished, for, in the space of just 11 amateur bouts, he had won a bronze medal at the 1975 Pan American Games (losing in the semifinal to future titlist Michael Dokes) and earned a spot on his country’s 1976 Olympic team. Berbick lost his only Olympic bout to eventual silver medalist Mircea Simon of Romania and he liked Montreal so much, box he decided to relocate there after the Games.
In a 2012 interview with Graham Bensinger, Mike Tyson discussed the story behind his face tattoo, saying, “I just thought it was a cool tattoo. I was going to get a bunch of hearts and stuff. That would have been really stupid. I was going to be the man of hearts, baby. I was very close. Victor Perez, the tattoo artist said ‘I ain’t doing that. I can’t do that’.”
Later, while doing early morning roadwork, Ippo approached him. After Ippo mentioned how he must be full of spirit now that his match is set up, Takamura noted that it is only the super middleweight class, grumbling that he can’t afford to waste any more time since he is behind schedule. When Ippo revealed that Kamogawa and Yagi has a dream of having a fight at the Tokyo Dome, Takamura became motivated to have Ippo and him take Kamogawa to the Tokyo Dome. Ippo reminded Takamura that he isn’t a boxer anymore, but Takamura told him that it doesn’t matter how he gets there. Later, Takamura was at the Yamaguchi Chiropractic when he gets thrown out the window by Yamaguchi after asking her to “do it” with him to give him motivation. As Takamura left, a crow defecated onto his head, he locked eyes with a black cat, and Tomiko called out to him. After Takamura informed his gym mates of the bad omens he had at the Yamaguchi Chiropractic, Ippo suggested for him to go get an Omikuji at the shrine he goes to. Takamura declined at first before going with Ippo and Itagaki to the shrine to get an Omikuji. After getting the worse luck Omikuji, Takamura ran away. Later, while on a walk, Takamura noticed a boy chasing after a ball he dropped that was going out in the road. Seeing that a vehicle was coming towards the boy, Takamura ran in front of the vehicle to grab the boy, jumped off the hood of the vehicle and landed safely. However, since Takamura accidentally cracked the boy’s ribs while holding him, he took him to the hospital. While there, Takamura explained the story to Ippo and Yagi, who rushed to the hospital as they thought that Takamura was hurt.
From 1992 to 1995, while in prison for the rape of Desiree Washington, Tyson read a large number of books, including works by Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong. Spike Lee sent Tyson a copy of tennis player Arthur Ashe’s deathbed memoir, Days of Grace. Tyson was moved by the book and respected Ashe’s ability to be nonconfrontational and admired his political views and his success as a black athlete in a white-dominated world. Tyson got prison tattoos of both men on his biceps: A portrait of Mao, captioned with “Mao” in all-caps, on the left; a portrait of Ashe beneath the words “Days of Grace” on the right. Gerald Early views the Mao and Ashe tattoos as together “symboliz both newfound self-control and his revision of black cool”, with Mao representing strength and authority. Clifton Brown in The New York Times describes the Ashe tattoo as “a contradiction” with Tyson’s “fits of rage”. Early and biographer Richard Hoffer cast the two bicep tattoos as an unusual combination of, in Hoffer’s words, “alternate icons”.
